Definition

Answer framing is how an AI response positions a brand, product, category, or recommendation.

AEO/GEO context

Answer Framing supports the AEO/GEO topic graph by clarifying the language, risks, workflows, or sources that affect how AI systems discover, compare, and explain brands.

Expanded definition

Answer framing includes category placement, audience fit, strengths, limitations, competitor comparisons, and implied recommendation logic. It determines what a buyer is likely to believe after reading the answer. This concept is most useful when it is evaluated from the buyer's point of view. A mention only has value if the answer explains the brand accurately, places it in the right category, and gives the buyer enough context to understand the tradeoffs.

Why it matters

A brand can be mentioned and still be framed poorly. The framing is often more important than the mention itself.

Example

An answer says a vendor is good for small teams when the company wants to be understood as an enterprise platform.

Common mistake

Counting mentions without reading what the answer actually says about the brand.

Diagnostic question

After reading the answer, what would a buyer believe about who the brand is for and why it matters?
